Course Description:

In light of the prevalence and impact of trauma, finding new and effective treatments for trauma-related disorders is critical. Research has shown that both EMDR therapy and ketamine treatment are helpful interventions for PTSD, but the potentially synergistic combination of the two approaches has not been adequately studied or developed to date. 

Due to the safety profile as well as the neurological, subjective, and therapeutic effects of ketamine, it is a useful complement to EMDR therapy reprocessing. This approach can enhance memory reconsolidation and adaptive resolution of traumatic material.

In our pilot study completed in 2024, we found that Ketamine Assisted EMDR Therapy™ led to a statistically and clinically significant reduction in PTSD symptoms and functional impairment. Clients subjectively reported that during Ketamine Assisted EMDR Therapy™ reprocessing sessions, they could process their traumatic memories with less fear, in a more relaxed and peaceful state. They reported experiences of expansiveness, safety, compassion, and clarity. Clients expressed feeling more connected to their emotions with less resistance to difficult material. Minimal adverse effects were reported. The positive effects of the treatment persisted over time. 

This course will introduce learners to this novel method of combining psycholytic (low dose) ketamine with EMDR therapy reprocessing, by teaching the specific procedures utilized. This course will also include case presentations and video demonstrations.

Learning Objectives:

*Name at least 4 reasons why adding psycholytic ketamine to the standard EMDR therapy protocol might improve client outcomes in trauma treatment.

*List at least 3 special considerations for Phase 1 and Phase 2 when assessing and preparing clients for Ketamine Assisted EMDR Therapy™.

*Describe the unique and specific steps of the Ketamine Assisted EMDR Therapy™ reprocessing protocol (Phases 3-8).
